St Michael and All Angels' Church, All
Stretton
"A local Ecumenical Partnership
with the United Reformed Church"
Historical
Background
St. Michael’s
was built in 1902, following a period when worship had been
held in various farmhouses in the All Stretton area. The
Rector of the day was a leader in the project, and there was
much local enthusiasm. Costs were met from a large number of
local donations.
All Stretton is an Ancient settlement of about 180 houses,
with a further 40 in the scattered hamlets and isolated
farms to the North end of the Parish. The village has always
had a strong sense of community and cohesion, much of which
centres on the Village Hall and in whose life St. Michael’s
people join with enthusiasm.
The Local Community
St.Michael’s aims to be “the
church for the village”, welcoming all regardless of their
denominational roots. When the URC chapel (built in 1907)
was closed in the early ‘80s for structural reasons, the
chapel congregation moved to the church. At first they used
the vestry, but with increasing co-operation, a Local
Ecumenical Partnership was established in 1994.
Fourteen years on we are “one seamless congregation”.
St.Michael's have had a
partnership with St.Michael's Church Mokhotlong, Lesotho,
reaching back to 1962. Visits have been made both
ways. We also support the Hospital at Maseru, and the
Sisters of the Community of the Holy Name, working among
families in Lesotho affected by AIDS.
