Roof repairs - pictures

THE START OF THE WORK

(scaffolding - March 2018)

(the seats have been removed and the scaffolding supported from the walls to avoid damaging the floor)

STRUCTURE

(there are timber strips to level the roof; wallboard to take the plaster; insulation and sarking board; this structure will support the tiles and insulate the church)

STATE OF THE EXISTING TIMBERS

(the roof structure is generally sound, with a few decayed areas, especially the vestry roof; such problems are inevitable in a building of this age; less decay than was feared, but matters could have been much worse if the roof had started to leak more widely)

 existing timbers

SOUTH TRANSEPT

(a few rafters in the south transept needed partial replacement with new oak)

NORTH TRANSEPT

(the lower ends of two rafters were badly decayed on the west side of the north transept so stainless steel reinforcement was needed)

ECOLOGIST

(an ecologist searches for any bats or nesting birds whenever tiles are being removed)

TOWER DOWNPIPES

(refurbished and partly renewed downpipes were put back on the tower)

TOWER GUTTERS

(the tower gutter lead was too thin and had cracked, leaking rainwater into the underlying timber, so new lead replacements are needed)
